Rattssss !!!!

still trying to get my 73' 65hp evinrude running. Reasemble lower unit with new gears and all is well.

Seems when i fix something......something new goes wrong.

Been scanning the posts and have picked up alot of info but still cannot rectify my problem.

Have had the boat in and out of the lake for water tests but still having issues.

Latest........
Engine barely cranks and starter worm gear sticking in upright position.

I greased the gear and still sticks.

I pulled the plugs and engine cranks just fine and starter gear returns to normal position.

Noticed the safety nuetral switch has a white wire on the top. Also has a terminal on the bottom but no wire. Didnt find any loose wires.

Thought battery was low but since it cranks fine w/o plugs, i assume its ok.

Pls help.

You could have a weak battery but most likely it's your starter going out IMHO. The motor has very little compression with the plugs out so the starter doesn't have to work as hard to turn it.

Try it with a battery that you know is good and charged and see what you get. If you get the same result, replace the starter.

There is nothing wrong with the starter gear. Ignore that. There is only one white wire on the safety switch. OMC had the good sense to use a stock off-the-shelf switch that just happens to have two terminals.

Slow cranking is because of a bad starter or weak or defective battery or corroded connections or bad cables. You gotta check that stuff yourself, we can't. Don't do like every other sucker and run out and buy a new solenoid, that is the least likely to be the problem. And if you put in a car solenoid (like every other sucker), it will destroy the safety switch.

Im thinking bad starter ? because i used my jeep to jump it and i still get the slow then nothing crank ?
