raw water conversion to H/E

Just discovered that our recently purchased 1998 Seaswirl 260 Sedan w/5.7 GSi & DP-S drive is raw water cooled,so now I am looking to add a full system H/E to it.I know that there are potential problems in doing this but am willing to try and make it work, anyway I need to know what all needs to be replaced, installed, etc. If I understand correctly the full system goes through the mainfolds but does that mean there is no raw water going through them? and if there is raw water going through the manifolds as well as glycol then whay not just go with the half system?

Volvo doesn't make full systems where there is AntiFreeze in the manifolds. Have no idea about aftermarket kits, or even if they make a kit for the EFI models.
Even if they did, the risers would still be raw water cooled, that is how the cooling water exits the boat.
Everything with a number on it comes in the FW cooling kit from Volvo. Costs about a grand for the kit.

Some have reported chronic plugging of the H/E when converting a raw water system - all the sand and rust keeps coming out of the engine.
Do the pros recommend it?

It "LOOKS" like the same thing, but who knows for sure.
Even if you do get it, you will still need the expansion tank, both parts of the thermostat housing, a number of fittings and hoses.
You may get away with mounting off the engine, I have done that before on boats with no room for where they were designed to mount, just takes a BUNCH of creative plumbing.
There is also some fittings going to the VST that have to be hooked up.
Have no idea where to find installation instructions, they come with the Volvo kit.

Thanks and good to hear from you again.
Is that you Tony?

hystat:
There is about a 50/50 chance of it working on older engines. I explain that to the customers and tell them that if they plug up, you can't really get to the tubes to clean them, and the HE would have to be replaced. From there it's their call.

Re: raw water conversion to H/E

Thanks again Don and yea its me, well I'm aware of the risks, there seems to be only 3 choices here: 1.flush the current engine out the best I can and install a H/E. 2.replace the current block with a fresh one and then add a H/E. 3.continue as is until the engine gives out. I suppose I could run the engine as is and add a nuetra-salt system while I figure out where to get a block and in the mean time try to pick up a cooling system too. So back to the H/E on E-Bay,how do I find out which particular H/E I will need, call the boat manufacturer and ask them? find the V.P. part# ?

Probably wouldn't hurt to install the NeutraSalt system now and use it till you get all the parts for the HE system. Might stand a chance then.
You aren't going to find any numbers for that heat exchanger from the boat manufacturer, and Volvo will send you a Heat Exchanger with a part number. They sure aren't going to ID one for you from an ebay picture.

I would check for a complete kit from someone like San Juan Enginering in the Seattle area. I have one on my boat and they are great. Keeps the salt out of the engine and allows you to run a 180 deg Thermostat which is much better for the engine and more efficient in combustion as well.
