Raw water pump rebuild

I just brought home a 1988 Wellcraft Nova 23 XL with a 454 in her. I am in the process of "baselining" her. I just pulled the pump and replaced housing, impeller, front wear plate and quad seal. I have a few questions that I probably should have asked before I put her all back together.

1. When looking into the intake/output ports should the vanes of the impeller be "sealing" on the opening of their respective ports? I seated the impeller into the new housing as best I could but it appears there is a gap between the port and the vanes. I do believe I have it turning the proper direction.

2. The screws supplied in the rebuild kit seemed much shorter than the ones one her previously. When putting the nuts back on to attach to tensioning plate, they barely, if at all, come through the nuts. I would say there is full engagement but the old ones had nearly a 1/2" sticking out of the nut. Should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance,

-Andy

( I realize I should have tried pics but I was hot, tired, and well, starting to catch a buzz)

Re: Raw water pump rebuild

it dosen't matter which way you install the impeller, it will right itself upon initial startup - just be sure you get the hoses on correctly

use the old bolts/nuts

Thanks dubs.

I was told to be VERY careful in getting the vanes bent the right way as the motor wont be able to self right. So many differing opinions. Can't hurt to have them right I guess.
