RDS22 40hp tiller conversion

I have a 1960 RDS22 40hp that I want to convert to a tiller. It has a dial on it where the tiller handle would go that has works as a throtle control I' imagining in case the cable broke or something. What I was wondering is if I need anything other than just the tiller handle?<br /><br />Is there any other parts that I would need? <br /><br />Thanks

Yeah, there is something. There's a weird little gear on the shaft that runs from the base of the tiller arm to the throttle tower. This gear links the tiller arm to the throttle shaft, so when you tilt up the tiller arm you can still work the throttle. With the "pointer" in place, there's no need for that gear so they don't use one.<br /><br />Get the gear or better yet, the gear attached to the throttle shaft. Their pinned or piened (can't remember) but it's a real problem to pull the gear off the shaft.<br /><br />Other than that, you basically unbolt the pointer housing and bolt on the arm. Get the castlated/drilled nut, washers, and slotted bolt that comes with the arm so you install it easily.<br /><br />If you need, I think I could post a photo.

Thanks Paul,<br /><br />I have a 68 20hp johnson that is tiller I can look at. Is it the same type of gears?<br /><br />The tiller handle I'm buying has the gear for the handle but from what your saying, I need the gear on the throttle shaft thats behind the pointer right? Well I guess it's time to start watching ebay. Maybe twin city will have it.<br /><br />I picture does say a thousand words!!!

You've got it. You need the mating gear too.<br /><br />This is from some Big Twin parts I have around. They're not from the 40hp so they're a little different, but should be similiar:<br />

<br />On the far left is the pointer assembly. Note the throttle shaft runs all the way from the pointer to the throttle tower.<br />Next is a tiller arm. It terminates in about the same place as the pointer bolts on, and engages a gear to turn the throttle shaft.<br />Finally there's a picture of the gear that mates with the tiller arm's gear on the throttle shaft. All these pics are taken from underneath so you can see what's going on.<br />On the tiller arm, you can see the bolt, large brass washer, cupped steel washer, and drilled nut that are used to attach the tiller arm to the tilt/steering assembly.<br /><br />I hope that helps!
