Motor: Evinrude fastwin Model # 18302E Serial # E06926 1963 18 H.P.

I replaced the impeller on this motor, during reassembly things were going together difficultly.
I took it back apart. Upon further examination, I noticed that the water tube grommet at the top of the impeller housing was out of place on one side and shoved down the tube. Question: when attaching the lower unit, or gear case, back to the gearcase extension, how do you line up the water tube, drive shaft and shift rods accurately? I got the shift rod and driveshaft in, but it is almost impossible to see to line up the water tube while lining up the other two parts, I have one more grommet but if I screw it up I will have to order a whole new kit...any tricks to this???? THANKS!

Ah, I remember you had a locked engine too, was it the water tube grommet? If so, have a close look at the 5" water tube extension and make sure it didn't slip out of place at all.
I use a long bolt in place of one of the lower unit bolts so I can gradually raise the lower unit while lining up the tube & shift shaft. I also liberally grease the water tube and bushing as this makes them slide in much more easily. Other than that: pen light, little mirrors, ESP.

Re: Re-assembly....

Thanks for the quick help Paul! I still am not sure why the thing would not turn over, after I lowered the lower unit, the motor turned over fine, next I turned the driveshaft by hand and the propeller was also turning, forward and reverse, just fine....
Now, if I read you right, the water tube extension came out with the low unit, a copper 7 1/2" tube still attached to the imeller housing inlet/grommet. Thanks for the long bolt method and will definately use the grease! Thanks for the fast reply Paul, I appreciate it!

Ah, I see now. Normally the extension stays on the water tube. In fact usually it's a lot of trouble to get it off. If you tried to put it back on like that, that would be a real challange!

The extension lengthens the tube by 5" but measures 7 or 8" overall.

Re: Re-assembly....

So Paul, should I try to insert the extension first then?

Yes, it will be a lot easier to line things up if you first insert the extension onto the water pump tube. If you've taken the 5" exhaust housing extension off, that goes on next. Then the lower unit.
