When an engine says its been rebuilt what does that mean?

When does an engine need to be rebuilt?

And last, is it true that an engine can only be rebuilt once?

Thanks

The best way to tell the extent of a rebuild is to lok atthe parts list.

Typically, a rebuild includes.

Piston rings - sometimes pistons.

Bearings

seals/gaskets

Cylinder honing and/or sleeve(s).

Most engines can be rebuilt more than once.

Re: Re-build What?

I recently purchased a boat with a rebuilt Johnson 150hp. Parts lists are not available from the rebuild. I don't know why, but I thought cylinders could only be honed once.

You can hone a cylinder more than once IF it's stays within specs..ie..bore specs. Most typically, when an engine blows, one or more cylinders will need bored. The rest can be honed if they are still in specs. Ya' only got about .004 to play with when honing.

The difference between repaired, rebuilt, remanufactured, manufactured and blueprinted is in the specs and tolerances.
