Re-building control box

Well, here's the deal. I have a 1991 Evinrude. I've been having problems getting the shift cable adjusted. The cables were replaced, still, no fix. What happens is I'll adjust it to go into forward, but then, it will not completely engage reverse. Adjust it to go into reverse, and forward will not completely engage. This didn't just happen overnight. It's progressively got worse. The pocket on the engine where the adjuster wheels get locked in place is good and tight. The last thing to replace are the nylon pieces in the control box. Pushing and pulling on the cable end indicates there is some play there. So anyway, I guess OMC has "upgraded" these parts, and they are no longer available. I've scoured the web for any new old stock, to no avail. What I have found is there is an upgrade kit that replaces most of the control box internals. My question is, has anybody here done this upgrade? If so, how hard was it, and did you have to replace the cables as well?

Re: Re-building control box

Would be helpful to know just what hp engine you are working on. Why not just see if the engine shifts normally w/o the cables? Disconnted the shift cable. Start the engine and shift it manually (by hand.) If it shifts normally in manual mode, the problem is in the cable adjustment, as you thought. If the engine won't shift normally in manual mode, the problem may be with the lower unit itself, or something with the midsection shift rod.

Sorry. It's a 100hp industrial. It shifts fine without the cables. The problem is in the control box itself.

All you can do is open up the control box and have somebody push and pull on the cables to find out where the slop is.
