Re-built starter is in...now no spark. Help!

It finally got warm enough out to get the starter in that I had rebuilt over the winter (thanks to all of the help for trouble shooting that problem on this forum). Now the engine (4 cylinder - 2.5 liter - OMC engine) cranks over great but won't start. I pulled one of the plugs and grounded it against the engine block (I at least know how to do this test) and found that I had no spark. What's next? Is it the coil? Is there any way to test the coil? Is there any trouble shooting threads for no spark similar to the (very helpful) starter trouble shooting page on this forum? It appears that I am getting fuel to the engine because the plug tips are wet and smell like gasoline.

Any help as to where to start trouble shooting the lack of spark issue would be very helpful. Thank you in advance.

Sounds like your points need cleaned and gapped. Go to the "sticky" section on tech information at the top of this section and look for #16 and 18 about point fired ignition maintenance that should answer alot of your questions good luck Bill

Did you leave a wire off or perhaps replace it in the wrong spot? There is likely a power feed from that area. The heavy cable goes from the battery to the starter solenoid. There are smaller wires feeding other things from the starter - like maybe your coil.

you will connect the purple wire from the plus side of the coil to the starter cu when you start the starter it sends 12 volts to the coil only at start up..... i had the same problem and Don S told me what i am telling you

If it's been setting all winter, it could be nothing more than needing a new set of points. They get glazed over and corroded from sitting, and no spark.

Re: Re-built starter is in...now no spark. Help!

I did some more trouble shooting today. I took the lead from the coil and grounded it and found that I had no juice from the coil to the distibutor. I replaced the coil and still didn't have any juice from the coil to the distributor. I then thought that it might be the 50 amp fuse on the ignition system. Replaced fuse (even though it looked ok) and still nothing going from the coil.

What's next?

How and where did you check that?

HMMMMMM changed a coil but not the points... Everyone on here including the MAN have told you to change the points out.. Will Likely be the problem.. Must enjoy throwing parts... Guess you will have a spare fuse and coil now..

Juice? Confused by this word... Like as in spark or voltage?? BTW if that coil did fire it woulda knocked the tar out of ya.. Get ya one of these little jewels... http://www.harborfreight.com/inline-ignition-spark-checker-4424.html

Sold at every parts store... Nice little tool and you can see if you have fire from the key switch...
