I'm getting ready to re-carpet my Pontoon. Have the rails, console and old carpet stripped off. The decking is all good. I was wondering if anyone who has done the job before has any hints or things I should be watching for to get a good outcome.
I have been looking at indoor/outdoor carpet. The store were I have been looking has some that is listed as "Marine Grade". Sorry to say it is the cheapest, sorriest looking stuff they have. This is a lot of work and I don't want to put down crap. any one have any suggestions??
Thanks

Re: Re-Carpeting.

Welcome to iboats.

Lots of glue and take your time, I woud roll out the carpet first to make sure it fits and is positioned right then fold one half over glue and instal the other then do the other end and if you can roll it that wodl be good, even with a rolling pin, it will get all the air out and help spread the glue.

A far as carpet the indoor outdoor stuff should do fine just watch your color, the darker it is the hotter it will get in the summer.

A for glue,we use somehting that I would swear is Elmers glue but really and indoor out door glue will be fine.

Why glue it down if you have furniture? Won't the furniture hold it down?

Re: Re-Carpeting.

I will be doing this next season on our 2001 Benn. I plan to go with the design I saw at a boat show last year: vinyl with snap down carpet in "foot" areas. Carpet will be in sections in order to remove and clean. This design was on some of the Benn boats and looked good.
Just my 2 cents
Congrats to Irish on great B-ball season from a frustrated displaced Spartan

Not necessarily, it can still pucker and buckle even with furniture on it, your living room carpet has furniture but you still put down a tack strip, sort of the same thing.

Seems we are building alot of those full vinyl floors and alot of half vinyl half carpet boats and I just watch football, never really cared for BBall although always good to have the Irish on top in any sport and anytime we can hand it Sparty is a good day, you guys really spanked us this year.

You guys are one of the teams that have me worried next year, not to mention the season opener against USF, what a way to start the year!

Re: Re-Carpeting.

Thanks for the come-back 5150abf. On the carpet, the carpet I am looking at in what they say is a "Marine Grade" doesn't seem to have any backing on it. Should I go with it or some of the better looking stuff that a better looking backing??

Re: Re-Carpeting.

I redidi a freinds boat with that and it seems to hold up pretty well for being so thin, I think that is so you cna work corners easier and it dries faster.

I have the 32oz super carpet from work on mine, it is super plush but does take a while to dry, really what ever you likeis fine as long as it is for outdoor use.

Re: Re-Carpeting.

I did a total refurb on my pontoon 2 yrs ago and as 5150abf stated,....Take your time and use lots of glue and do it in the shade..The sun will cure the glue faster...i also rented a lawn roller from the local Ace Hardware store and rolled it really good..only had one small wrinkle which I fixed with gorilla glue after the original glue had cured....Good luck and as several members stated, You will put more dollars in it that it is worth but knowing you did it is worth every dime you invest...Mine is an old 89 Bass Buggy, but I get complements all the time about how good she looks.

Re: Re-Carpeting.

Done mine 2 years ago with marine grade from Lowes. Here is a tip, do not use any more glue then is necessary because it will ooze through the carpet when you roll it out. Use the correct notched trowel as per the instructions on the glue bucket. The other thing (if you use latex glue) is to keep it DRY for a week......cover with plastic if necessary to keep the rain off but try to leave some space for air circulation.
