Re: "Do not pull this plug"

I recently purchased a boat with the OMC Cobra 4.3l and had the same issue, I went to the local marine shop and the technician sold me a small livewell plug and this seems to be working. He said that this is just a drain plug and would not hurt to put a plug in it, so far seems to be ok i hope this will not ruin anything but is far easier than removing the whole outdrive.

Re: "Do not pull this plug"

If your talking about a Cobra do you know there is a plate that goes on the inside of that plug? If the plug got taken out then the plate is inside of the there somewhere.

I dunno for sure but I wouldn't want to use the boat with that plate loose in there. I would think it would be possible for it to block something.

And if you just bought the boat it would be a good idea anyways to take the drive off, get the plate out , and check everything out. Check out the u-joints, bellows, engine alignment, etc.

Get an OEM service manual too. It will save you tons of money.

thank you very much, i don't suppose you know if i have to take the whole outdrive off or just the lower unit i have heard both, i guess i could start with the lower unit but yes it does kind of scare me that it could block the return water from the engine somehow.

Don't take apart the lower from the upper unless you absolutely have to. Taking the drive off is easy and something you should be doing anyway every year. Since you just got this boat, you should be pulling it to check the condition of the u-joints and gimbal bearing.

Mine is a 86 Cobra you cannot take just the lower unit off because of the shift fork. If you try you will bend the fork or bust your case way easy to take the unit off make sure you are in neutral so the shift fork will be straight.

Yes of course!

I didn't even think of that. Glad you pointed that out.

If you don't want to take the drive off don't.
When you get to servicing the drive then fix it then.
You might be able to just back it out and reach in and get the part and reinstall it.
I bought an extendable finger thing and used it as a holder to install the part.
