Hey there, I am looking for some input on what my best options are.

so , in my boat (closed hull runabout) I have some 1x3 vinyl covered runners, that basically hold things to the side of the boat.

I decided to refinish them, and while I had them out, I noticed they were somewhat waterlogged.

So, prior to recovering them, I coated the boards in Thompson's water seal, and refinished them.

now, the Backs of the boards have a zillion staples to hold it together, and I was thinking when I screw them back into the boat, I can apply a coating of some kind to minimize water penetration.

So Ideas I have contemplated.

1 - Duct Tape.
not really a problem, except one of the boards actually will have the staples exposed to the elements. so I expect it wont last very long,

2 - Metal Foil tape. (used for sealing metal duct work to keep air flow in the tubes.
Its not too expensive, but its not cheap. and I worry its going to peal. but since its actual aluminim tape, it wont dry out.

3 - glueing a extra strip of vinyl to the back
This seems like the best option, but I am not sure what kind of glue to even use, glueing vinvyl to vinyl.

as you can see in the photo, the long aboards are what I am talking about. the second red box is an arm rest of sorts, and the staples will appear from the bottom, and likely take some environmental abuse.

I dont expect a perfect water seal, just looking to minimize the issue.

please and thank you

anyone have any other experiences? ideas?

hi.

normally.....on the backing of upholstered parts......there is a thin material that covers the unslightly back and staples....i wish i had a pic...

this material will look better and deflect water.....the material is sometimes even a thin vinyl

If you had used stainless steel staples you wound not need to protect them.

I went looking for "marine staples" and I found one box in about 12 stores, and they wanted 22.95 in the store I found them, i am almost glad I didnt since my electricstapler is a decent one, but its bending too many stables. so a lot of throw aways.

what kind of glue is recomended for vinyl to vinyl adheision

If you really want to get rid of you water intrusion problems, replace the wood 1x3 with starboard of an equal dimension. Cut, sand, and finish to fit ans upholster as normal. Use SS staples and a pneumatic gun. SS won't work in an electric stapler (too soft) and steel staples are just going to rust away in a year or two and then the new vinyl will be pulling away from your trim work. That looks terrible, too.
