The out drive gear lube resevoir was removed form my engine during removal of the engine for a y tube exhaust repair. I would like to clean out the resevoir of any residual sludge and re-fill it. I remember reading somewhere that the outdrive gear lube system needs to filled from the lower unit back into the resevoir. I this true? Can I just put frseh gear lube back into the resevoir without any problems?

If you only empty the reservoir, you won't have to fill from the drain plug. Just remove the top vent plug when you refill the reservoir to bleed any air out of the line.

Thanks for your reply. The drives are still off the boat and the resevoir is off the motor which has not been re-installed yet. I was thinking of cleaning out the resevoir before it is put back on the engine and before the drive goes back on. Can I clean it out and re-fill it now or should I wait to re-fill it after the drive is put back on ?

You can do it any time you like, just be aware that you will have a small gear lube 'loss' as the oil from the bottle displaces the air in the hose. Unless you fill the bottle from the bottom of the drive, this is normal...
