Re-glueing the magnets on 91 200hp flywheel??

I have a 91 200 HP V6 with all of the magnets loose on the flywheel. There are some marks where the magnets were originally glued on but it's vague. What would be the proper placement for these magnets? Spacing them equally apart should be easy enough (exact measurements would be nice if anyone has them) but I would think that there would be some sort of starting point in order to get it properly timed. Also one of the magnets is broken almost exactly in half but when I place each 1/2 on the flywheel they pull together and look as if they are one piece. Would it be safe to glue those 2 pieces in place or is it important to get a new one?
Thanks for your help

The trick to regluing is getting the flywheel clean. Bead blasting is the preferred method. Sanding works.

A magnet kit is available from any John / Evin dealer to replace the broken one. It comes with the epoxy glue but you'll need more. Any good 2 part epoxy works.

There is a front and back to the magnets. One edge will have a corner cut off. Make note of the placement before you take the rest off.

Spacing is easy. We use blots to hold them apart while the epoxy is curing. Exact placement is not critical. Just mark the edge of one before you take them off or while you can still see where they were.

A clean dry surface is the key. Regluing the magnets is done all the time, not a big deal.

The instructions say to use bolts to space the magnets. :p

1" long pieces of 5/16" outboard fuel line works also.

You cannot use a cracked magnet as the tach will think it is 2 magnets and give erroneaous reading.

Oops!!

Well, the secret is out. We have special blots made -- I guess we might as well start selling them. Maybe iboats wants to stock them. They're cheaper by the case.

hello
I just use 7/16 14 thread bolts. make sure all the notches face the same direction, and cleanliness is super imperative. just before epoxy application I wipe all surfaces with acetone and a clean paper towel. the only magnent that placement is critical is the inner mag. some models had timing marks most dont.

Exact spacing can be done using 3/8" OD fuel tubing.

Hmmm
I was hoping that there would be some type of mark to measure from for the first magnet since all of my magnets have came loose. I'll make a mark on the outside that lines up with the epoxy marks on the inside before I clean it up completely.
Thanks guys

It doesn't matter where the first magnet is located, just so they're spaced evenly.

Just a thought,it seems the magnets can be spaced fairly evenly by eye,or oher methods.Do they weigh much?5500 rpm and more makes me ask.

DHP

They weigh enough that I would think there could be a balance issue if they were just thrown in there, but yes spacing them by eye would probably be close enough but I want to get them the exact same distance apart. I'm kinda picky that way.
To Joe Reeves,
Won't having the magnets in a certain place on the flywheel cause a timing issue? I just assumed that the timing is controlled from the magnets and the stator?
Thanks

Re: Re-glueing the magnets on 91 200hp flywheel??

timing is controled by the inner magnet and the relationship of the timer base. all the outer mags do is supply voltage from the charge coils, power coil and battery charging coils. if the inner mag is loose your most likly in need of a flywheel. spacing is not super critical. I use 7/16ths 14 thread bolts, just like the manual says. dont use excessive amounts of epoxy, leads to early unbonding. it is critical to insure all the notches are in the same direction. but direction of the first is not a requirement. but however you lay the first all must follow.

Ok Thanks guys.
I knew something in there had to control the timing.
