Re-installing Merc Alpha Outdrive???

I have a pair of Alpha drives I am attempting to re-install. Everything lines up, including the shift pawl, but I am falling about 3/4 inch short on both drives and can't seem to get them to go any further. Any ideas on how to handle this? Note: the drives are in forward and have roated the prop counterclockwise so the spindles are in alignment. Any help provided is much appreciated.

Did you use an alignment tool to get the gimble bearing lined up properly so the driveshaft can slip through it? If not you will not be able to get it on, the gimble bearing swivels and it needs to be aligned by sliding the alignment tool through so you can get the driveshaft all the way in.
