I just got a new boat. It's a Sunray Aruba Bowrider 15' boat. I posted earlier about the rating plate being 100 hp in the US and 60 KW in Canada. I mounted my 1975 Evinrude Hustler 75 hp on the boat and it runs at 34 mph which is adequate but the motor does not have enough torque especially with more people on board. I'm on a budget so I have to find something under $1500. What should I go for? I was looking at the Mercury 3 cyl motors from 1987-2005 either an 80 or 90 hp. But i'm more of an OMC kinda guy. What about an Evinrude or Johnson 90 hp V4 is it too heavy? They look a lot bigger than the Mercs. A Yamaha 90 hp would be nice but I think too expensive. Fuel is also a concern. One day I will get an Etec or 4 stroke but right now I have to keep it cheap. What does everyone say? Thanks!

What are your WOT rpm's? Sounds like dropping down one prop size may give you the low end grunt and still leave decent top speed. If you can find a J/E 90 you could try it, the weight should be alright. The Yamaha 90 is nice and light. I would look at a new prop or a four bladed prop and motor set up before I started trying to change motors.

What's your max wot numbers with you alone and lightly loaded boat, repeat same test with number of passengers you intend to take along, will need a prop maximization to get more fun out of that combo and probably avoid changing engine for a larger one. Distribute passengers weight well throughout deck.

Happy Boating

A 15' boat rated for 100HP is unusual. If you are sure of that rating, you will want at least a 90HP V4 from OMC or a 90HP IL3 from Merc. If the boat is truly rated for 100HP, the weight is not an issue.

Well like I said it's rated for 100 hp by the US and 60 KW whatever that means in Canada. As for the rpm I don't have a Tach on the boat.

Thanks, so that's funny that it is rated @ 80 hp in Canada and 100 hp in the US.
