Hey..

I have an oppourtunity to swap out my 90hp V4 1989 for a 1998 115 Johnson Fast Strike that has been rebuilt by a local evinrude dealer.

I know nothing about these fast strike motors, but Have been wanting to upgrade my motor to a newer motor, and to a 115hp.

This motor fits the bill for year, horse power, and price to do the swap.

Any thoughts on the fast strikes? anything to be concerned about.

THanks,

You are moving into a very different motor with a totally different wiring system; maybe you should invest in a factory manual before you take the big step.

Oh I should have mentioned that they are installing it for me... and hooking everything up.

They said there is an adapter which will work with my OMC control unit thats 130 bucks, or they may have a used control unit that will work with the fast strike...

Using the newer boat harness would be the best. That way you can use the newer gauges. Anyway, you'll be totally blown away at the difference in power (assuming the rebuild is done right and the set up is correct). The 60* V4 will rev much quicker and has a bunch more torque. There is certianly nothing wrong with a crossflow, just 1950's technology vs. 1990's technology. You'll not regret it.

If it were me I'd like to know why the motor had to be rebuilt and what steps were taken to make sure that whatever caused the damage was fixed.

Dhadley,

Thanks! They told me much more torque, at mid range especially. Its good to know that the swap is worth it..

I am curious as to why it was... I asked them if they maintained the motor before they got it , and they said no. I asked if it was them that went through it and rebuilt it , and they said yes.

Ill ask what was replaced and why they re built in on thursday when I go back in.

Thanks!

what are some of the things that could still be at issue on a rebuilt motor like this that is going onto a different boat, than it was on before it was rebuilt??

block water passage....

bad carbs?

bad VRO?

on a rebuilt motor, can we assume the carbs were rebuilt...or can a motor be rebuilt and the carbs just R&R??

I am rebuilding a similar 90 hp 1997 90 hp ocean pro...

one piston skirt was slapping...but i didnt know what it was, and dont know why it happened

but i bored all four holes any way and an installing all new berings pistons and rings..

and am rebuilding the carbs.

I did notice the inner exhaust housing was really clogged....

could that have caused a piston to start slapping??

thanks..

just looking for any and all info on motors like mine as i get ready to put it all back together

thanks

Re: Re-power to Johnson 115 Fast Strike

Well I went ahead and had the swap done!

I have yet to get out in the boat, but I have this thursday off and just hoping for good weather.

The shop warrantied the rebuild, and said it had been rebuilt because of low compression in a cylinder. They said they thought it was cause by a lean condition. They put carb kits in, and put a new oil pump for me.

I also went with the new gauge and wiring harness as recommend on here.

I'll post some pics I took today of it on my boat, tomorrow when I am on my work comp.

Thanks for the input guys!
