Hi all, I have a question, i have a 1973 16" tri hull, does anyone know what size motor came originally on this boat? currently it has a Johnson 40 h.p. on it. I was thinking of re-powering it but I don't know what size I should be looking, for and I don't know the exact model of the boat to research it. any help would be appreciated.

Not exactly sure about what max HP you can install per the boat spec plate. Two things, first post a few pictures of your boat/motor and second, why are you wanting to change to a different engine? If your 40 HP is presently pushing the boat nicely, why are you wanting to change it?

My guess would be a max rating of between 70 and 90. If it were mine, I'd look for a 3 cylinder 65-75HP motor.

I had a 1974 16' Monark tri-hull. According to the info tag 70 HP max.

i have a 1973 crestliner apollo 660 thats 16'3" and its rated for 125HP. i have had a 150 l6 that did 47mph on it,a 1992 suzuki 150HP on it that did 68mph,it was out of control at that speed. i now have a merc 115HP l4 that runs at 43mph and the 115 gets the best mileage. about twice or more what the suzuki was getting.

Back in the early '70's they ran 60 hp OMC loopers. Invader was a popular boat around here sold by one of two local marine dealers in the area: "Phil Dill or Jerry Whittle"...still selling boats and other water toys in Lewisville, TX.. I think they were made in TX. For a 16' it was probably rated for the V4 non looped 85 hp. Both engines were engine rated so for a post '85 engine that same HP number will give you about 15% more performance as it's now rated at the prop.

After the '70 hp loopers came out; '73 as I recall, they ran them on the 15' and probably on the 16' also.
