Hey all,

So I need to re-power my Boston Whaler and need some advice. It's an '82 Outrage 18.

It had a 1982 Mercury V-150 on it, I don't know the weight of that, so if anyone knows, please tell.

I'm thinking of two options. I either want to put a new Yamaha F150 on it (Inline 4, 4 stroke, weighs 491lbs), or an F200 (V6, 4 stroke, 608lbs)

Obviously weight is a factor, but like I said, I don't know what that old Merc weighed. Also the HP capacity is technically 150hp, but if the weights are comparable, I'm fine w/overpowering a bit so I can keep a better RPM range and not be full throttle all the time.

Lemme know your thoughts.

Re: Re-powering my Whaler

That boat is plenty fast with legal HP, Franco. There are many '80s Outrage 18s running around satisfactorily powered by 90HP outboards. If I had one of my Outrages back and needed to repower I would go for a YammaZukiE-Tec at or below specified Maximum HP.

Overpowering a boat is a very bad idea. Rationales like "partial throttle cruise" are not technically sound and are never adhered to. The risks are all avoidable by simply doing what the guys who designed and built that boat tell you to do.
