Re-powering weight problems?

I'm not currently in any position to re-power my boat (heck - I'm barely in position to put gas in it), but we all have dreams - and it seems like whenever I do decide to do it, I'm going to have to take a serious step down due to weight concerns.

My boat is 1961 14' Cherokee Aluminum runabout. Has a 1961 40HP Johnson Seahorse.

It's a 150lb motor - and the back of the boat sits low enough in the water that I can't imagine hanging much more weight off the back of it... but a new 40HP can't really be had for under 200lbs.

So what do folks do?

do u have water in the hull?

u think a 40hp would be perfect for that kind of boat

Step down to a 25 or 30 HP etec. The other problem you'll find is that there are few choices in 15" motors. You would probably notice little power difference between the old 40 and new 30

I repowered my 1966, 16', Cherokee with a 2004, 40hp Mercury. It was the only new 40hp I could find with a short shaft. After looking for four months I found it in Charlet, NC. I bought it over the phone and drove from St. Louis, MO. The next day to pick it up. It's a lot longer sad story... But that was three years ago, it's all good now. Just turn the key and away I go just under 30 mph.
