Re: Re-ringing A Merc 4 Cylinder
I just rebuilt the powerhead on my 1995 merc 40hp 4 cylinder. You might need a ring remove/replace tool, but I was able to do it without the tool. Just be careful not to spread the ring too far apart! The manual says that "Putting the pistons/crankshaft assembly back into the cylinders can be a frustrating task" and it recommends using ring compressors to help. I was able to get the pistons down into the cylinders without using the tool. The cylinders have a runout for the first 1/2" of the cylinders and that allows the rings to compress as you push the pistons down into the cylinders. The tough part is keeping all three rings on the piston in the right orientation while pushing them into the cylinders. Put some 2-cycle oil on the cylinder walls to help. The only special tool you need for the whole job is a flywheel removal tool.<br />Hope this helps
