ok guys ... i need to completely re-rivet the top skin on my gunwales. the problem is ... 1/8 inch rivets are to loose .... i did some today as a temporary thing and most of them came right out of the the gunwale.... sooooooo do i re-drill all those holes to accept the next size bigger ( 3/16 ) rivets or should i use the 1/8" rivets with backing washers ?? seems like even if i use the backing washers that there still could be movement as the shank of the rivet will still be loose in the original holes that are worn .... the 3/16 rivets look so HUGE compared to the 1/8" opinions guys ?? scott

lowes has packs of 50 of the 3/16 x 1/4 grip range for around 5.50 a pack

maybe id be better going to fastenall tomorrow

McMaster-Carr has them in boxes of 100 for $7.88. I never had stuff from them shipped because I am close enough to pick up, but the cost might be worth it.

I'm with Jas on this one.
How many of you used manual screw drivers to disassemble your boats?, I used my screwdrivers as chisels, pry bars and to open paint cans, but used my cordless drills to remove screws.

I don't have one of them fancy pneumatic riveters yet, but I do have a lot of riveting coming up and may have to invest in one. I think I do DIY projects to justify new tool purchases. It may be an addiction.

As Popeye says "Eat your spinach" LOL

Air powered riveters clinch their rivets tighter than hand riveters. Setting 50 or so rivets by hand and you'll have sore forearms and fingers for two days which tends to slow down or stop progress on said tin boat restoration...rant over...

Oh man, I thought the same thing. On my Jet Star project, I did the exact same job, punched boxes and boxes of rivets by hand. Wore out 3 or 4 hand riveters too.

I just recently grabbed that air riveter - smokes what a difference!

It would have taken me a fraction of the time to do the same job.

I warned ya!

I've done 500+ rivets all by hand with the same Stanley hand riveter. I, or my Dad who can fix anything, could not get the HF air riveter to work right on the aluminum shanked rivets.

If you have compressor, yes the air riveter is the way to go. If you don't - Eat more spinach.

i found some 3/16 x 1/8 range rivets at a local hardware store. would you guys prefer the 1/8 or 1/4" range length for the rivets ?? iver tried both .... 3 strokes of the hand riveter for the 1/4 .... and 2 strokes for the 1/8"

It's best to match the range length for the thickness of the 2 materials you are fastening, for the gunwale skin though I would guess the 1/4"...... Have fun!

So have I. I must have gotten one of the really crappy HF riveters then. I though maybe the difference was the shank material. Oh well, the majority of my riveting is done.
