Re: selva 90 montecarlo starting problem.

I have a selva 90 montecarlo outboard which i am told is practically a re-badged yamaha autolube. This has been very reliable and then one day it decided not to start. The starter motor turns over but only just, once and then i have to recrank it , but it turns over nicely once i take out the spark plugs. I beleive having taken the starter motor apart that it is fine and i have tried a couple of batteries both of which i know to be ok. i have tried running a cable straight to the starter motor from the battery and this makes no difference as does running a cable from the earth of the batttery directly on to the engine block earth! I was wondering if anyone knows of anything else i might try and any info would be gratefully received.

If it won't crank directly from the battery its probably the starter.
If it some how got out of time could be the problem.Pull the plug wires and ground them, see if it cranks better.Check for water in the cylinders.

With the plugs out see if you can turn the flywheel by hand.

First of all steelespike, many thanks for your help and time, it is much appreciated.
Tried pulling the wires and it still won`t crank and there is no sign of water. I am able to turn it over easily by hand at the flywheel with the plugs out, and also with the plugs in although obviously this is`nt easy. My suspicion lies with the starter motor now. I have removed this and checked it and it looks very clean indeed with a slight sign of wear at the bushes but not what i would classify as significant, however my knowledge in this field is limited. One thing i have noticed and that is that it seems to be getting unusually hot, is this normal??

Is there a way that i can test the starter motor?? It will crank the engine with the park plugs out but struggles with the extra load when they are in.

Sure seems thsat the starter has failed.Getting hot quickly is surely an indication. Not cranking with a direct jump aslo indicates problems now that we know it turns easily.A starter repair shop can test and repair if its not a to obscure starter.

Yeh thanks steelespike, starter is made by mes which is quite common, i took off the lower unit today to rule out resistance being created by the drive shaft but it is all ok, i have heard on some yamaha models bushes can cause this to stick a bit. I think i will throw caution to the wind and replace the starter and see what happens .

Re: selva 90 montecarlo starting problem.

was lucky enough to get a second hand starter motor on italian ebay and fitted it today and guess what- it still does`nt work!!! I am tearing my hair out with this one now!!! I have done a voltage test coming out of the starter solenoid with 13.2v going in and 8.8v going out. I realise this is probably insufficient to crank the motor properly but when by-passing the solenoid i still get this slow cranking and yet i am still able to turn the motor over by hand at the fly wheel!! Also cables and starter are getting rather hot. Anyone who has any ideas i would much appreciate it. I realise that the solenoid will need replacing but know having tried by-passing it, that i will still have the slow cranking, or is this perhaps is not the case????

Sounds like you bought a bad starter. Usually the the reason for failure is one of the wires in the coil wraps are broken. Not normally something you can see. Heat is caused by high resistance. If the new starter is getting hot it is probably bad as well.
