I have a question on re-sleeving a 88 hp crossflow. I see the sleeves on the internet without ports cut in. They look like straight sleeves. The sleeve in the block has notches on the outside. I am thinking these are cast-in sleeves. How do you replace the sleeves in this engine? Is it better to replace the sleeve or bore everything out to .030 or .040? The machinist thinks he can get it at .030. He does has not done any of these engines so he was not understanding how to replace the sleeve without a shoulder on it.

Any help would be appreciated. places to send it to maybe. I'm in ND.

Thanks, Dan

Just bore all cylinder at 0.030"-----If that won't clean it up find a used engine block.------Lots of them around !!

Thank you for the reply's, The problem is I am up in ND and there are not many marine specialists up here. The machinist is good but mostly does race cars. He said there was no shelf to set the sleeve on cutting the ports was no problem. He is going to bore it out to 30 and see what it looked like them go to 40 if he has to. Looking for a different engine I have not seen anything that looks even as good as mine.

You use a sleeve from Advanced Sleeve. You bore existing cylinder for interference fit using the web on crankcase rod slot for the step. Freeze sleeve in nitrogen, heat block to 350 in oven and sock it in. When it reaches room temp, mill top of sleeve flush with block and use end end mill and ball cutter to cut ports. They have to measure EXACTLY the same port heights and lengths as other cylinders

Well I got good news from the machinist today. He cleaned it up at 20 over. So all holes will get 20 over pistons. A lot of worrying for nothing. I only paid $750 for the motor so I think I should make out OK.

Great news, Engine runs great. It was a lot of fun rebuilding it. Hope it lasts for many years. Thanks for all the help.
