How difficult of a job is it to re-upholster boat seats? Can a novice do it? I have a 1990 Bayliner Capri, how much vinyl would I need?

Thanks

Re: re-upholster

Believe me or not, I've reupholstered my entire boat -28' wellcraft Monte Carlo with $99.00 sewing machine that I got from Costco (It had a big sticker on it - will handle 5 layers of denim, which cought my attention).
I've done cabin upholstery with fabric, seats with vinyl, snap-on carpet, replaced some vinyl windows. The entire job cost me about $500.00 including the machine. I'm mechanical engineer by trade. I'll try to post some pictures later, when I'll figure out how.

Re: re-upholster

It really depends on how you want them to look when finished, when I tried mine it wasn't too hard to do but the results were less than professional for sure. The corners are tough, no copeing/pipeing sewing is difficult without the right machine. Marine vinyl is also kind of expensive so its a shame to use up money and have it turn out so so at best. I ended up just getting new back to back seats and calling it a learning experience. If what you are doing is pretty much square and flat it would probably turn out okay or if you have some prior experience at upholstering things go for it but to redo seats with no experience is tough or it was for me. Good luck maybe someone with more experience can get you going better than myself.

Re: re-upholster

Thanks for the information. Guess I am not looking for the a top of the line-quality job here. I'm more a substance over style guy. Just wondering if it's possible to recover the back to back seats decently and how much vinyl is needed for a 18 foot capri?

Thanks

X2 thoughts here...Measure one seat, add extra then multiply X2 for back seat

OR

Sacrifice one seat, removing vinyl, to get more accurate measure, adding extra for S and Gs.

I have Bay 1950 with B2B seats! I hate them. I want to convert to a bench-style, opposite to one another [ ] along the gunnels(?) with the captains attached. I have seen similar in older outboard flats.

Any thoughts??

Re: re-upholster

I prefer substance over style which is the reason I'm just going to buy all new B2B seats, new bases, new hardware, new foam and new vinyl.
About $150 each piece.
