Re: Winterizing an EFI Merc.

Just wondering, I have a '95 225 EFI Merc. that I will soon be winterizing (sadly). I winterize several boats for several people. On some of the later Johnny/Rudes I use the CRC fogging fluid which screws onto the fuel service port, & that works pretty well. On my merc. I also have a service port as I guess all EFI's have. I would like to know if you guys think I can use the same procedure on the Merc. or if there are some issues I don't know about. I've always been a kinda by the book guy & the books don't say Yea or nay to this. Thanks, Joe

That's for testing fuel pressure. That injection can won't work on that. Remove the spin-on fuel filter and discard the contents. You can usually reuse the filter, but replace it if you prefer. Put 1 tsp 2-stroke oil and 1 tsp fuel stabilizer into the filter. Drain the fuel from the VST (there's a small brass screw/plug at the bottom) into a container. Pour some of that fuel into the fuel filter and reinstall it. Now, pump the primer bulb until firm and run the motor for a few minutes on the hose. That will oil things up well. Squirt a bit of fogging oil into each cylinder if you wish, but that's not terribly necessary unless it's going to be stored for a few years. :)

Thanks Willy, I do all that as part of winterization, I was just wondering if I could use the service port as I would on an OMC. Guess Not

Re: Winterizing an EFI Merc.

Perfidiajoe,
I have a 97 150efi.I have read either here or in my shop manuel not to use a fogging oil because it might mess up one of the sensors on the motor.
What i do is...1. when i think i will be using the boat for the last time i estimate the amount of gas in the tank and add 2stroke oil to make a 50;1 in the tank and add a can of seafoam....so when you take it out the last time you will run a 25;1 oil/gas mixture and thr seafoam through the motor.
2.Flush the motor out on the garden hose ( use the adapter location)
3.Change fuel and bleed line filters.
4. Change spark plugs and add a cap full of oil down the plug holes .(turn kill switch off and turn over)
Then do all the rest of your winterizing.

I've used the Merc. Fogging oil (Storage Seal, I Believe it is) every year since the engine was new, I also believe it is recomended, both on the can & by my dealer. I appreciate the responses, I was just wondering about the service port
