xtraham is right. Spray bombs are only good for small areas at best - no matter what you are painting. And besides, you wouldn't be able to move the finger you use to hold down the spray button for weeks:D

I am rolling and tipping my 18 footer this weekend, I bought 3 quarts of Interlux and 1 quart of reducer for $ 31.00........on Ebay, type in topside boat paint.....plus blue tape and brushs and roller, still works very well. Check out the search here in the forums and check it out. it you take your time and prep the boat right it looks great. By the way I fell down the steps going to look at the name on the paint,,,,so I hope it works out for you LOL

Re: RE_PAINTING

Price of paint should NOT be the prime issue. Cheap paint and paint not properly applied will lead to higher cost in the future.

We can all appreiacte a good looking boat but what makes it great is when it lasts.

Go to an automotive paint store. Look at straight colors that would be easy to touch up in the future. High quality primers are needed too.

For topside marine single stage/part polyurathane I believe I paid 89-99 for the gallon. Automotive paint would have been almost the same or more.

Stay away from rattle can spray paints.

Painting is a lot of work if you want to do it right. If the gel-coat color is not offensive and if it will buff out nice, I would just clean it up. You may be surprised by the results.

Do a search. Lots of discussions on restoring gel-coat finishes.

If you do paint, take the time to do it right. The modern 2-part marine paints give excellent results with proper prep.

Re: RE_PAINTING

i painted my last boat ( a 27' bayliner victoria ) with cheap marine enamel and did a stripe on the comand bridge with automotive base/clear.used a good quality siphon feed spray gun.prepping took 3 weeks of wet sanding.arms still feel like rubber.looked great for about 5 years.then fenders and the likes marked up the hull abit.interlux would definatly last longer
good luck

Re: RE_PAINTING

Hey, I was not giving you the price to help you save money LOL I was just giving you a ball park of what I spent. My buddy did his Sylvan river jon with it and it looks unbelievable....and has for the last 4 years. I was sold as soon as I helped him do it. I have been preping the boat off and on for about a week......my boat has a ton of striping on it, that needs to come off ummmffff. I will tell you take your time with the prep, you will be glad you did.

I could not remember the name of the paint, I was in my bedroom and I said to my wife...."hun what was the name of thet paint I just got"....she said " Don't remember one of the cans is sitting on the basement steps go check it out".........so down the steps I went, slipped on the first step and landed about half way down.....some bruises and scapes, nothing that will keep me from the river LOL

Re: RE_PAINTING

What everyone has said regarding prep-work is the gospel. A properly cleaned and sanded surface gives the paint something to grip to. I painted an old arrowglass boat nearly 20 years ago (I was 17), I spent 4 days, all day long sanding and prepping the surface. I sprayed the boat with an Imron automotive paint, with a clear-coat. A few years later I sold the boat to a buddy of mine; I was out on the boat just this summer and it still looks great, he keeps it covered when not in use, but the paint is STUCK!!!

Re: RE_PAINTING

What about spray paint that is custom made at the paint shop? My GF works at a paint supplier where they mix a base with 'Nitrate Dope' and put it in cans right there.

It's the Spray Can that's the Problem...............

You Can't get a Good Finish with a Rattlecan,......... Period........

Re: RE_PAINTING

yup the fine overspray makes the finish look uneven...not enough reducer in it to blend and smooth.
