Reading RPM's

I have a 2005 Yamaha F115 that is running ok but I noticed the rpm's appear to be off sometimes. Went to come up on plane and it usually happens around 3500. I had to push it to 4000 or so to get up then it seemed to be reading higher than usual for throttle position. Seemed to sdlowly back off with no noticeable difference in the engine sound or speed. When I went WOT it hit the normal rpm and speed.

Is there an easy way to confirm rpm's? And what might cause this fluctuation with no effect on motor performance?

Thanks

Re: Reading RPM's

So your seeing higer RPMs than you normally do right? How long have you had the boat? Any chance it could be something as simple as cavitation? Kinda sounds like the boat was heavy. Any chance there was a leak or saturated floatation foam? Hard to tell but it is odd that it corrected it's self at high speeds. This leads me to believe it isn't a mechanical problem and more of a drag issue or perhaps a damaged prop. Here is why. If there was no slipping in the gearing (which you would easily notice) then there is no way for the engine to have noticeable difference that I can think of. If the link between the RPMs and the prop is good, its probably not an engine problem. If you had told me you cant get the RPMs up to the normal levels we would have all sorts of things to explore, but it sounds like you have good power. Perhaps a lower unit issue but again, there should be some noise or vibration. I have seen this when I have trash (weeds or fishing line) wrapped around the prop or when the bilge pump malfunctioned. When its the water or weight issue, the boat may perform almost normal at full speed in full trim and having most of the boat out of the water thus reducing the drag. One other issue could be what is in the boat. Any chance you rearranged something heavy in a different location that may make the boat bow or stern heavy?

Re: Reading RPM's

Happened again yesterday. No debris on the prop, trim all the way down. Getting on plane isa t around 4k+ used to be 3500. reads "high" at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, when I go WOT it doesn't change the rpm reading much but motor does make noticeable change in power. Then tops out where it used to. Doesn't seem to be affecting overall performance just the rpm reading.??

Re: Reading RPM's

I second the thought on something on the boat has changed.
Does this boat sit in the water all the time?
Is there growth on the hull?
Does it have a plug in a drain for the under floor area trapping water?
Does the prop look OK?
You can mark the prop hub to see if it is slipping, but I have not seen one heal itself once it slips.

You can have the tach tested, but if it reads OK at WOT the it should be good.

May need to have motor tested at a Yamaha shop with the test prop for that motor to make sure you are not having a problem with the motor.

Re: Reading RPM's

No growth on the hull. It is stored at the marina dry storage on a rack, covered. Bilge is always dry. Hadn't been on the water lately for various reasons. Motor was repaired recently with a new high pressure fuel pump/checked out by a Yamaha Certified mechanic on the water. Had problems bogging down at around 3k. Just noticed this a few trips after. In the past it always planed about 3500 then slowly rose with throttle movement. Topping out at 5200/32mph(I know, seems on the low side of it's range)Still seems to change the motor speed with the throttle but the tach seems higher. Where is the tachometer reading? Other than the strange reading it seems ok. Any recommendations on a check to make?

Re: Reading RPM's

Back to this again - Today went to prep the boat(after not running about a month). On the wrok stand I start it and the tach goes to the high end, pegged. This is at idle and does not move when I rev the motor. When i turn the key off it stays. Then when I just go tto the on position it moves to where it should have been at idle ~1900. HAven't put it in the water yet but I would assume it will happen again. I've read a bit about wire connections, etc. Is there an easy check to see if something on the motor is causing it?

Thanks

Re: Reading RPM's

I should say that when it goes to full tach, then I turn it off it stays there. Then when the key goes on it continues around clockwise to what would have been the correct position. I was surprised it woulld continue around and not go back counterclockwise.
