I just bought a 1989 alumacraft with yamaha pro 50 hp oil injected motor. I do not have a manual for the boat and do not know how to read the gages. When I start it a green light, next to a oil can symbol, stays on. I guess this is normal but I would like to be sure. Can some on tell me how to read the gages? Does it have a over heat alarm and a oil alarm?

Hi,

You did not write what Year the Yamaha Pro 50 was made.
Anyway, You can download a 1994 Yamaha 50 2-stroke User manual here and have a look (it probably apply to some years older and newer also): http://www.yamahaownershandbook.com.au/lib/download.php?f=63B-28199-20.pdf

Yamaha Pro 50 could have analog or digital guages so the oil level warning lamps should be like this depending what you have: see image below.

yes your engine is equipped,or was when manufactured, with bot low oil level audibles and overheat audibles.
the oil visual indicate was located in the tach and the overheat visual was located in the speedo,if equipped.
basically on that engine if you get an audible,or RPM reduction and the green or yellow lamp is illuminated its an overheat.
on the above chart,on the pro 50, disregard the last block about a clogged filter.
that is applicable only to V configured motors not the inline 2 and 3cyl models.
to test the overheat audible find the temp switch on the stbd side of the head, with key on engine off dissconect the pink and black wires,plug/short the two together, alarm should sound.

Thanks alot guys. I think I have it figured out. I went and downloaded that manual. It is a BIG help. I am more familar with omc and mercury, this is the first yamaha I have worked on. I replaced the impeller, it seemed easy to work on.
