Hi guys snowmobile projects put away now boat projects start again. i bought a new outdrive for my 1983 470 merc. i'm replacing a I-R version with a SE106. My question is when i removed the old out drive and separated the top and bottom end the two surfaces from both ends that are press against each other they were bare metal the new ouitdrive the surfaces are painted, should it be bare metal for better seal or what should i do?
here are the pictures of new outdrive

the only place the halves seal is the oil passage

there shoud be a quad ring glued into place on the lower half

pressure test the joined halves before filling with lube

yes you can see that ring in the one picture but if the halves only seal at the ring what stopping the water from getting in everywhere else

Even if the joining surfaces were sealed, water would still be in there, it's the exhaust passage for the engine and carries 'old' cooling water with it. When the engine is shutdown, that area floods... Hence on need for anything other than the quad ring you saw.

And if the drive-shaft has an 'O' ring groove, DON'T put the 'O' ring on... Toss it in the trash...

no it doesn't have the o-ring grove but the new coupling end does look at picture of the new coupling beside the old one the orings don't line up and the coupling end has a oring groove what does this mean

The new one is for the grease-able coupling. Just put the first 2 'O' rings on and fit it all up, you'll be fine...
