I have been away for a bit, mostly building wooden skiffs...but I had to check in and show you that under the heaps of junk out there, there are some jewels still remaining.

I answered an ad on my local CL and without a lot of hope, I met an older gent that had this motor in the back of his truck. Now I have quite the collection, I think 40 or more (all OMC).. but this was different. I have never bought a motor with a two-line tank..but this one was calling to me. This sportwin 10 is 100% complete, you could eat off of the inside, and even the rubber seals are soft, clean and like brand new. so.... here is my question:

Do you think I could start it by using a funnel to the carb.. since I dont have a tank, and if I try this, do I need to pinch close the pressure back line, or does it matter?

Q2

I think I could convert to single hose just by reading the links here, but will this lower or raise the value??

You should be able to start it that way, will not run for too long but could see if it will start. I would put a new impeller in it before running it for more than couple of seconds. Might be able to find a pressure tank that is usable, they are around in good shape, some may need gaskets but that is not expensive. I have a 58 10hp and 59 5.5hp that both use pressure tanks and neither has caused any problems.

nice find. Don't trust that impeller.

Regarding the conversion: it will lower the value as a collection item, but what matters is what value you place on it. If you want to use it and don't want (or can't find) a pressure tank, than the value of its use to you is what matters.

Nice looking motor. If it was mine, I would leave it original, never hurts to have a pressure tank around in case you happen onto another "two-liner".

that makes the most sense. there are a look of "tin-cowl" outboards in the area that I live in, and I have always walked away from them because of the fuel delivery system. If I invest in a decent pressure tank, I would have a lot more to "pick" out there.

You can start with a single line tank if you keep squeezing the primer bulb. As a cheap test a hose jug and primer bulb should do the trick.

Personally I would not convert it. You can always find a pressure tank with hose and fittings. $50 as a low price, $100 average and 150 on the high side. Check Ebay.

It's a nice motor for sure! I personally think it would not affect the value. For one thing, they sold so many of those that they're not rare. Secondly, you could convert it to a single line and keep the parts to convert it back to double line if you find a purist that wants to collect it so they can convert it back. Last of all, you're going to use it, so who cares??
It's not worth much----do whatever you choose and don't worry about it.

I agree with JBJ, we arent talking about a rare motor here. Also, to convert back take a few minutes and a new bypass cover. Not really worth worrying about. I convert a motor in about half an hour, less to convert back.

fully agree, get another bypass cover, drill and tap it, do the conversion. keep the original parts, and convert back at any time in less than a half hour, still would be 100% original.

heres a pic of mine,( not as nice as yours tho)but its on the list for the conversion!

I have a beater version of your motor, I left all the original 2 line stuff in place, I put a screw & hose clamp on the intake hose and a mikuni pump lies under the carb, fed by a nipple in the by-pass, I mounted a single line connector to the opposite side. with a screw driver and 3 minutes I can run single or dbl. line tank.

I think they would work fine, briggs & stratton lawn tractor pumps work fine as well & they are cheap. I have one mounted on a 58 10hp & it works just fine.
