Re: Real World Prop Diameter, Pitch, and Material questions

Welcome aboard. I can honestly say I have never had anyone ask about prop life, and the more I think about it, unless you whack one, they kinda live forever. I think I'd just get away from that concern . . .

Considering your requirements, I'm thinking used aluminum and try a few. They're cheap. Try Craig's list. I do have a few questions though.

I assume this is an SX drive?

Volvo recommended WOT = 5000
This should be expressed as a range, not a fixed number, I'm getting 4400 - 5000.
A calculator told me my ideal WOT = 4864
Not sure what this means. You must have plugged some numbers in, including gear ratio and a slip percentage. Not sure how you would arrive at that, seems backwards . . . ;)

I'm getting 10% slip with what you have, and all the math lines up. Why do you want to change?

Over time al props will wear especially in silty, sandy or murky water. That said there are plenty of 50 or 60 year old al props still in operation. Can't speak to composites.
And ss would wear the longest.Disregard your wear worries. If you strike something with a composte you will more than likely lose a blade and some you can replace a blade at something like $8 to $20 I think? There have been reports of spontanious blade failure.
Usually an al prop you will ding a blade or 2 sometimes not requiring any more than a clean up with a file. I think a major 50hp al prop repair, around central NY, is about $40.A 5 blade does perform very well but a 4 bld al prop at about $100 will run a close second.

Have you heard anything about going up 2 on the pitch for a fully loaded boat? Seems to make sense to me.

Ayuh,... That's exactly Backwards,...

You go Down in pitch for more pulling power,....
