REALLY Dumb Volvo Engine Questions

Don't say I didn't warn you, lol....

I just purchased a 21 foot Bowrider (1995 Wellcraft) that had a new powerplant put in around 1999 or 2000 along with a new outdrive. The engine is a 4.3 Litre Volvo which appears, like the rest of the boat, to be in good shape. That said I'm about as mechanically inclined as a small rock.

So I have two question, the second one being the most p;erplexing and hoping someone can provide me an answer to one or both of them.

1. I've always had outboards which just seem so much more obvious to figure out than the stern drive idea.

So, I took the boat out tonight after getting advice from a local boat service place I've always used. I had started it (and had it running a couple of times for a couple of seconds) just after I bought it so I know it turns over but tonight (despite putting some gas in since I think it was low on gas when I got it) It would try to start but just wouldn't turn over even though I choked it. I don't think I flooded it as I couldn't smell gas when I removed the cowling. And I know someone will say this so just to make it clear yes I ran the blower for a few minutes before attempting to start it...

I tried over and over for half an hour until I ran the battery down in the end. Any thoughts? Is there something I might be doing wrong or could try?

2. Now this may sound weird, at least it seemed weird to me. Below the main engine housing is a small tube (copper I think), no more than a quarter inch thick or so that extends out from the engine about six inches. At the end of it is a ribbed kind of knob that can screw on and off with a hole in the end. The tube was pouring water out into the back of the hull beneath the engine (which seems like a very odd place for water to drain). I tried tightening the screw/knob thinking that maybe when tight it restricts the water but that did nothing. I unscrewed it and it did nothing. Either way it continued to drain. It wasn't shooting out hard just a normal steady flow.

The small tube is obviously supposed to be there but is it supposed to be attached to something? Is it maybe that something is supposed to be in the end of it to stop it from releasing water? Am I an idiot? (don't answer the last question)

Ayway, rather than hauling it all the way to the service place I thought I'd ask first in case there was some obvious answer.

Anyway, any help you culd provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

First thing that comes to mind if it indeed was recently started would be the kill switch. It is located in the driver compartment. It is a safety device that can be hooked to a lanyard and attached to the driver. If the switch is tripped the engine shuts down.

Ok, remember that part about me being an idiot? You're indeed correct on question 1...LOL

I took the boat in to have it cleaned and the cleaners pulled the key and the kill switch and put it in the glove box. In my STUPID rush to get it out there I forgot to put the kill switch back on. OMG I cannot believe how brain damaged I am!!! Thank you...

Any idea what might be going on with that drain or tube?

Ok, here's a dumb thought to add to a dumb question and tell me if this makes sense...

Is there such a thing as an overflow for the water sucked up from the outdrive?

The reason I ask is obviously from continually trying and filing to start the engine could it be that I was just sucking up so much water that it had nowhere to go so it was coming out some kind of overflow valve?

No idea on #2... maybe someone else can help out on that one. A digital picture may help solve the issue.

Ayuh,..... You Really need to get yourself an Education about your driveline,....
Before you Destroy it........

My Guess about the water spraying out of a tube is,.....
It's probably some sort of Drain for draining the Block,.....
But that's just a Guess........

Re: REALLY Dumb Volvo Engine Questions

Most of us here have been caught with our pants down when it comes to that "Kill Switch" It happend to me at the boat ramp on a very busy Saturday when everyone including my boat guests were looking at me from the dock with a what the !@#$%$ look. The hose you are talking about is the flush hose that allows you to flush your motor without running it on muffs. YOU CAN'T run the engine when flushing through this hose. Further investigation should find this hose connected to a T-fitting that has 2 hoses going to each side of the block where the drain fittings would be. While this does a fine job of flushing the engine, it does not supply water to the "Sea water" pump that is either attached to the crank shaft lower belt pully or on a bracket on the starbord side of the engine. There is another design that does send water to your sea water pump, but that has a clear 2 way antisiphon style valve that your flush hose would hook into then be tied into the main water hose that comes from the outdrive and goes to your raw water pump. If you have this style, you can run the motor while flushing. I have the first style that I mentioned on my Volvo. Just put the brass cap back on and make sure it has a washer in it. This should fix the leak. When its time to winterise again, do a good flushing through that hose then drop it in the bilge with the cap off to drain the Block. you'll still have to do the risers and manifolds. Hope this explains it and a little more. Happy Days..

So, again not to repeat myself, but not being mechanically minded, does this mean you recommend not running the boat if this continues to drain water or is it something that once running will stop draining water?

I guess put another way my question is, with the boat in the water, once it does fire up will this stop draining or will it continue and if it does continue what can I do to remedy it?

Re: REALLY Dumb Volvo Engine Questions

Also, re-reading your last post, I should explain again that the end (screwable 'cap') of the tube also has a hole in the end through which the water is pouring. In other words it is not a cap that 'seals off' the tube, it is hollow like the tube. Thus the water is coming out the end of the cap not between the seal where the cap and tube meet, therefore not sure how a washer will do any good.

A picture is worth a thousand words...:)

If thats a flush adapter or block drain there has to be a way to close it.You can not run it with water pumping into the bilge.
