I need to ship a box to a guy so he can ship me a 1984(ish) 25HP engine. I think this engine block was used extensively during the 1980's. What I need is the length of the box so that the engine will fit inside.

if somebody can grab a tape measure and tell how tall their engine is from tip to tip I would greatly appreciate it. and if a long shaft with midleg extension then length of extension kit would be awesome. Thanks.

I have a 1974 Evinrude 25hp LONGSHAFT (20") that measures just about 47 1/2" from the bottom tip of the skeg to the top of the recoil starter assy when standing straight up....WITHOUT THE ENGINE COVER ON.

I can measure it with the cover on if you need it....have to dig it out of my garage.

I would guess your motor would be very close to mine heightwise....unless yours is a short shaft. If it is subtract 5".......42 1/2"

I would guess the cover only adds an inch or two maybe.

Do you mean a short block powerhead or the whole outboard? If it's just the powerhead, it'll probably fit relatively will in a 20x16x14 box. Have the seller make sure it's well packed in cardboard. Foam peanuts won't cut it...

it is a whole short-shaft outboard. with cowl on would be great to protect wiring & stuff but it is simple matter to pop off cowl and put down near prop if it makes a big difference. I'm going to have walmart deliver a deck/dock storage box to the guy. He can dump the engine into it and I can call fedex to go get it. The deck boxes come in all different lengths from 30" to 45" but at 42" it starts running into oversize charges and if its too big then weight starts too enter into it. I want to make sure to get the right one.

he can always remove the LU and prop and put it beside the mid section. would have you 9 to 10 inches and you would have to bolt it back together.

The longhshaft extension on mine actually appears to be about 4 1/2".

With the engine cover on you will definetly be well over 42". Should be just about 43" even with the cover off. I will get the cover out and measure it....could be a couple of hours.

And remember mine is a 1974 but I doubt if there would be much difference.

So all you do add or remove a 4-1/2" extension to go between shot or long shaft? The one in question is short shaft. But, that's a pretty awesome feature. i wonder how much an extension kit costs?.

It sounds like without taking the motor apart he should be able to just drop a short shaft engine into a regular deckbox. The walmart cheapies are 43-1/2" internal and about 18x24 cross section. I'd rather not have the guy take the engine apart. I might not be able to get it back together or find all the parts.

Some of the admirals floating around would probably know for sure but I was unable to find any difference. It looks like the basic motor was in production for decades. The year is unclear. I guessed 1984 because of the paint job.

Beside the outer housing for the long shaft extension, you also need the longer driveshaft, shift rod, and water tube. Not sure if you just add extensions or use a complete longer extension for those parts. I'm sure someone else can tell you. May need other parts as well.

The long shaft extension "kits" I have seen for sale are usually pretty expensive...haven't seen one advertised for less than $100 and usually at least $150 or more. (private party sales, not dealers or retail parts suppliers)

Your better off buying a long shaft parts motor if you can find one. Thats actually what my 74 25HP is. I saw it at an auction I was at and picked it up for $45. Electric start/longshaft.....haven't even tried to start it yet but it does turn over.

Going out to put the hood on and measure my motor now.

The motor with the cover on is 49". The extension is exactly 5". So yours should be 44" with cover on......to the best of my measuring ability on MY MOTOR.

Can the person shipping the motor
give you the length?

I need to ship the deck box to them before they head out to where the motor is. I'm not reading anything to make me think that any version 25 2stroke short shaft can be over 44". So a generic injection molded plastic box looks like a go.

Mine is a short transom. It seems like converting a transom would cost more than buying a new engine. However, there are a lot of carolina skiffs down here and a 20" motor might sell better. It might be worth grabbing a kit if its cheap enough. If my kohler riding mower engine on mercury gearleg works out then I'll be selling this thing. I'd much rather plow a new canal than bother watching the depth finder. hehe

engine swaps like that done right have worked.....
it is easier to get the conversion parts from short to long than to get the parts from long to short from my exp.
