I am really bummed, my friends. :(

Got up early (4:30) because I was having bad dreams. Don't remember what the dreams were, but I woke up in a cold sweat and really down mood.

Went to feed Catzilla. She was not there. Decided to go out on the porch for a smoke. Catzilla was lying, dead, at the door. Not a big surprise. I had expected it for months. I had been her servant for almost 13 years and though she was not a friendly critter she was a companion of sorts. Put her in a box for later interment.

Went to the porch. Still pretty dark, but I could make out the doe I see regularly with her newborn out by the brushpile. Another shadowy figure I thought was the fawn.

Began to get light. HEY!! That isn't the fawn, it's a danged wolf!! And momma is standing there right in front of it. The wolf dives into the brushpile and comes out. . . momma takes a few kicks at it.

Gotta investigate/intervene here.

Neither critter noticed me until I was about 20' away. Then they both took off, clearing a 5' fence as though it was nothing.

One side of the brushpile was torn up. Broken limbs and trampled down. In the middle was a bloody spot about a foot in diameter with one, tiny hoof in the center. Nothing else.

The wolf had killed and eaten the fawn. . . all of it. . .with momma clearly putting up one hellofa fight, then standing by while it ate her baby.

That must be what happened to Spook, too. He disappeared about a month ago.

I know that nature takes her course. Death, even tragic death, is a part of the big picture. It still hurts when it visits those you value. :(

Sorry Man :( I was afraid that was gona happen to catzilla whe she was having her difficultys earlier this year.
Your wolf needs a dose of lead poisoning, thats a little too brave, comming up and eating the yard pets.
Im having alittle problem with my chickens, something has killed 7 grown chickens and 8 babys in the last 3 weeks, and I cant catch it. Happens in the daytime. (maby fox)
Again sorry about catzilla, I feel your loss,as I write this I have my old Dog in my lap, I know how we get atached.

Truely a couple of sad events JB. I can see how it has you bummed out. :( Now that the wolves have found a feast at the Hideout, be ready cause they will be back for more. Take care and be careful, don't want you to be their next meal.

JB,sorry about your loss.We do tend to get attached to these critters. I agree it is time for a little 30 cal. action for the wolf. He will be back. Heycods, I used to keep chickens--went out of town with my buddies on a fishing trip --something killed half my flock. The following week heard a racket--went to the coop and there were 2 raccoons and a possum going after the rest. Only survivor was the rooster. He never was the same after that.

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

I could have shot the wolf. The Browning .243 was just inside the door and the Ruger .45 only a step away. Both stay loaded and at hand except when grandbuddies are visiting. I am glad I didn't.

I choose to live with the fauna in my environment rather than disrupt the balance. That means let the wolves, as well as the coyotes, deer, bobcats, 'coons, armadillos, etc do their own thing.

One exception is that there is a severe penalty for 'coons raiding the bird feeders in the night. The same would happen to a varmint killing any livestock, but the fawn wasn't livestock. Neither was Spook. My only livestock are 4 quarterhorses that have a violent dislike for canids.

Wildlife being wildlife is one of the greatest charms of The Hideout and, like it or not, I intend to let them be.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, friends.

Sorry to hear of your loss , But living that close to nature, I guess you expect things like this to happen Good or bad .
Like the others have said , We do come attached to our furry friends though , I have two dogs the Older one is the mother of the younger and love them both dearly "Princess "(the mother ) is getting on in age and has arthis=tis (spelling) and in dogie years around 70 years old . It pains me greatly to see her limp around and still so full of life . I really do feel your pain JB and again Im very sorry to hear this .
Keep the faith!

I'd like to extend my sympathies as well, JB.

My 11 year old Blue Heeler/Black Lab is part of our family and I don't want to think of him leaving us, but I know his time will come eventually.

Pets are a wonderful part of our lives. I guess death is also a part our lives.

Once again, Sorry for your loss. :(

((((((((((((((((((JB)))))))))))))))))))

Sorry to hear of your losses. I too am now a cat person. Lost my buddy 2 years ago after 19 years and I know the empty feeling. About 2 month prior to his demise, my daughter brought in a 6 week old kitten.

Although not the same, it did, and still does, provide companionship and somewhat served as a diversion from the unhappy time. Best thing that could have happened, and most timely. Go get a kitten before your daughters do it for you - and I bet they will.

Sorry about your loss, JB. I'm a dog person myself, but I can relate to your loss. Our dog passed away earlier this year and the house just doesn't seem the same...Hang in there...

Bummer, JB!

Maybe I can lighten your day a little. A couple of weeks ago my kids rescued a kitten, barely weaned, from a nearby storm sewer. We put up posters around the park but nobody called. So I guess I have a cat now. I'm allergic. HEY! This was supposed to perk you up, not bum ME out. ;)

Try this... Wolf puppies are really cute, too. :)

JB, Wolves can be dangerous and against your feelings you might drop this one. Sounds too close to your house with grandchildren at play. Wildlife is great but sometimes we need to keep in mind they are also dangerous. I am new on here but sounds like you lost a good companion. Good luck and my sympathies with you.

Yes you can let them be, but nothing says you cant divert there attention, that’s why I have a bee bee gun for the squirrels near the sun porch and within firing range of the bird feeder.

A pellet gun might deter the wolves are make them look at another spot for food. So sorry about the cat, lost a good companion of seventeen years myself named duke, I know what your saying. :(

Re: Really sad day at The Hideout.

Hello JB,

As I get older so I feel increasing empathy for situations and things. I am often moved to tears, without any reasonable explanation. Simple things grab my throat and choke it bad, Sad things leave me devastated. I know you can relate and I feel with you.

Tonight I sit, a litte too full of of a fine South African Merlot (great red wine), and I too am melancholic. I am sorry you have lost two friends, both within a short period.

I know that as a conservationalist you will allow nature to take it's course without intervening, that's what a moderator does, impartiality, irrespective of the situation.

I trust you rest in the assurance that nothing untoward has robbed you of companionship but that nature has overcome, as it always will, with both you and I.

Cheers
Andrew
