1979 Evinrude 55hp: I recently rebuilt my powerhead, rebuilt carbs, fuel lines... The problem before is that the motor would not idle and I thought that the cylinders were the problem with the idle. The motor now has great compression within 5% of eachother and excellent spark. It starts right up but will stall as soon as I drop the cold start lever. The idle adjustment does nothing to keep it running, the choke is the only way to keep it going. I've triple checked the carb for clogged jets and have run wire through them. The link and synch has been performed correctly. This model has fixed jets and there is no way to adjust. I've thought and rechecked all of the simple/obvious.

The only thing that I can come up with is to enlarge the idle jet orifice and see if that corrects it????!!!!!

Any other suggestions? Thank you for helping me keep my sanity. I hope that I listed everything and don't sound too ignorant.

have you tried pumping the primer bulb to see if the fuel pump is failing. i am giving you credit, and assuming you removed the core plug on top of the carbs, and cleaned the idle jets.

When you rebuilt the carbs, did you remove the welch plugs and clean out the areas behind them?

If not, go back and start over. That's the most probably reason for your problem, if it's in the carbs, which it almost certainly is.

A lot of folks try to skip that step when cleaning carburetors. It's almost always a mistake.
