Finishing up replacing the water pump on an alpha 1/gen 1 drive. when reattaching the drive halves, it appears the shift lever can either move from center-->90' left, or center-->90' right. does it matter, or is one way correct (or is this altogether wrong?). i can post a pic if this doesn't make sense...

If you mean the shift shoes , you turn the splined shaft in the lower fully clockwise while turning the prop counter till it locks. this is fwd.Lower the upper unit and engauge the upper shoe in a straight line.looking at it from the top 12:00 fwd, 11:00 neu, 10:00 rev.
Manual #6 can be found in the adults section

sounds to me like the lower shift shaft is out of time with the shift shaft in the upper. from facing fwd., the coupler should turn to port only. it don't turn past facing fwd to starboard.

this is a 1 drive. your alpha1 should look similar

this drive is in neu., note the shift coupler turned slightly to port. if it went further to port, it would be in reverse. if it was facing fwd. it would be in fwd. also the condition it must be in to mate the drive to the bell housing. along with the remote at the helm being in fwd..

gotcha. didn't see that in the manual. so it should only go from straight ahead to 90' right (looking at the front of the drive) or to the port side of the boat. glad i asked before assembling...thanks.
