reassembly tip - alpha drive

I have an alpha drive removed for annual maintenance and I split the drive to replace the impeller. Now should I first install the upper on the gimbal and then bolt up the lower or reassemble the whole unit before I bolt it back on. I am thinking the former is better since my helper is off to college.....

Put the upper on the lower, then put the complete drive on the boat.
