rebiult engine won't idle

I have a 1985 Searay Monoco (cuddy cabin) with a Mercruiser 1984 228R (GM 5.0 litre 305 V-8 w/Rochester 4bb carb). The original engine suffered a cracked block and had to come out. I purchased and installed a rebuilt long block (block and cylinder heads). I am almost positive I set the timing right because the engine runs smoothly, until I try to bring it down to idle. As pull back on the throttle and get the RPM's down under 900, the engine bogs down, sputters and dies. I have since had the carb rebuilt, installed new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and new ignition coil. I have had the alternator tested. There is new fuel in the tank (50 Gal.). I have tried incrimental turns of the distributor to fine tune the timing. The timing should be 8 degress TDC for this engine, but I assume that sould be at idle, which I cannot do. The timing mark is off significantly to the left (facing the stern of the boat) when it runs it's smoothest. I assume this is because of the increased RPM's and that it would come in line as the engine slows. The only other thought I had is that I didn't set the lash correctly. Could this be the issue even though it runs well at higher RPM's? Any other thoughts? Please Help!

I'd start by checking for a vaccum leak. Make sure you have the correct gasket between intake manifold and the carb. There are two or three differant gaskets and you may have installed the wrong one. I had so many problems with my Rockchesters. I rebuilt mine twice and then bought another online and they suck. I finally bought a marine Edlebrock and they are fantastic carbs. It will idle down to 400 rpm if I wanted it. 650rpm is what you want though. If not that I would check that the carbs idle circuits and not plugged up keeping it from getting fuel and air.

You might also try removing the #1 spark plug, on the compression stroke, and make sure it's TDC and ensure you rotor is pointing to the #1 on your distributor cap. If the marks don't line up on the balancer your probably off one tooth on the chain or distributor tooth. If that's correct move your distributor about 1/4" and that should be approximately 8 degrees BTDC. I can't remember which way to turn it though.

Ayuh,... It runs outa Gas, 'n dies...
I agree with LX Kid,...
A rebuild don't always work out,...
try sortin' it out, or just replace it...

Sounds like a vacuum leak, or a plugged idle circuit...

Re: rebiult engine won't idle

Thanks for the advice guys. I had my carb rebuilt as well as ordering a new rebuilt carb which is still in the box. I guess I could try that one, or should I return it and order a new carburator? If I install the rebuilt I just ordered, I don't think I'm going to be able to return it. Both, by the way, are Rochester quadrajets. that sure is a nice looking carb LX Kid, I see you have the electronic choke, is that an easy upgrade? Is it worth doing?

Yes and Yes!
You also have to buy a spreadbore plate to go between the manifold and carb. The pic shows how I adapted the accelerator cable at the rear of the carb.

Re: rebiult engine won't idle

LX kid has given you good advice. the Rochester carb is a great carb when it works correctly. When it doesn't, it can sometimes be impossible to get to work. All it needs is one particle of dirt or one slight internal vacuum leak and you start to pull out your hair. Our last boat had a Holley marine carb installed by its previous owner. The Rochester was sitting in a box under one of the seats, along with an unopened rebuild kit! Since you plan on replacing the carb anyway, why not cancel the rebuilt Rochester and get an Edlebrock. Problem solved. Hy

Just wondering what progress you've made in finding the problem?
