Hi i had a few questions on a boat rebuild.
i Recently purchased the 19' glassmaster from an older couple for 500 bucks with a 140 hp merc of unknown age.
i already have all the supplies i went with west systems for material, i cut out the upper deck due to rot under the 2 fastory lounge seats. which led to me gutting the boat. anyone have anyinfo at all on these boats? Under the deck i found active stringers all still clothed and sealed with foam runners wedged all over kinda moist id like to remove and replace with a marine pour foam.
This boat is getting repowered in the spring with a 150 yamaha 4 stroke.
pics as follows i have plenty more
any ideas? comments please
web page

Re: rebuild 1976 Glassmaster

hi,

I got a 1964 Glassmaster 16" with a 110 IO. There isn't a lot of information out there on these boats. All I an tell is tat it started in the early 60's and shutdown in the late 80's, but I read recently that someone is trying to start it up again.

Mine is a full restoration, I got the floors off now, and I had 5 stringers, center, left and right of center 14" or so and the two up high near the floor/hull joint that were glassed over tubes. I think my hull was built like a destroyer and expect the boat to have a long and happy second life. Hopefully this weekend is me glassing in the new floors!

Re: rebuild 1976 Glassmaster

Hi Garrett,

I just received part of my order from US Composites today, the 3M bubbles, couple of rollers, couple of badger hair brushes. The 5 gall of resin is coming tomorrow, I only hope it is enough! I got 20 feet of 62" wide 28 oz roving that will become my new floor and transom. I cut the new floors last weekend, so hopefully this weekend is installation!

Take lots of pictures as you do the project

Section!?!? The WHOLE floor and the whole transom are being replaced. My stringers were in excellent condition so I didn't have to do anything there. If you read around on some of the posts, you will find a lot of guys that START with 5 gallons and then end up buying another 5 or more.

I am being optimistic that 5 will do it for me

The Resin just arrived, I swear I could smell it coming before I even saw the UPS truck

Re: rebuild 1976 Glassmaster

Garrett,
This weekend is looking good for the floor installation. I am about 45 minutes to one hour from you if you are up for the drive to see what you have coming, you are welcome to do so. Actually, I made it to TF Green airport this morning in about 30 minutes, but it was 5:00 am and a few speed limits may have been 'pushed'
Cheers
Ethan

Re: rebuild 1976 Glassmaster

Garrett,

I have a 1973 17' Glassmaster that is built exactly the same as yours. I replaced the transom two years ago and am currently putting in a new floor.

The old floor is out and the new wood is ready to go in.

What type of cloth are you using to tie the floor in with the rest of the boat?

I'm thinking about mat down the seams, then 10 oz. cloth covering the entire floor and chine. The fiberglass over the seams is pretty thick originally.

Does anyone think I should use roving with it?

I am finishing the floor with blue gelcoat that is rolled on with a white speckeled finish to make it non-skid. This is how the factory did it. You could paint this with some non-skid additive also.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: rebuild 1976 Glassmaster

well im still on the hunt from some glassmaster emblems. i used 18oz roving to mend sides in along with some filler first. im also using 7.5oz cloth 4 layers with some grizzly grip to finish the floor after sanding is done.
im curious on the year of the engine still its a ikeafer merc or something it still runs im hoping its worth a little money atleast tho i only paid 500 for boat :)
keep me updated brett i got tons of pics of mine.

How far out from the floor did you lay the roving? Did you go up the side of the boat?
Thanks.

Re: rebuild 1976 Glassmaster

Hi Garrett,

Sorry I missed your reply, I have been traveling for work since (in Arkansas now, landing in Warwick tonight)

I got the new plywood down the other weekend, then weatehr cancelled the rest. I am going to use filler on the plywood to hull joint, then use woven roving across it all and go up the sides about 8", I was then going to use about 12" wide mat along the seam.

It loks like mine originally had mat across the whole floor. I did woven roving for two reasons, I wanted a stronger floor, and it was a good deal on ebay! Hopefully, this weekend is me finishing it

If you want, I will offer my emblems as forms for a mold if you want to follow what Mark42 did.

Sorry again for not catching up with you

Regards
Ethan
