I've never rebuilt before but am ok mechanically.
Heres the senerio 1989 88spl ran real good 125psi on all 4 cyl. got caught in a creek at low tide and aparentally sucked up too much mud into the motor.
The over heat buzzer never went off but the motor stalled anwould not restart. I took the cover off and it was real hot with some smoke comming off the port side head. I let it cool down unclogged the pisser and restarted it ran then shut down. Did this one more time before getting towed in. Motor smelled burnt. The compression test read 80 20 60 90. There were shavings on the top starboard plug and the arm was broken off the bottom port plug. I think the motor is shot but could the head gaskets just be blown?
If I rebuild how do I know if the crank or rods are bent or the heads are dammaged? Also I saw a rebuild kit on ebay with new pistons for $500. If I rebuild should I go with .01 .02 .03 over. I believe the motor was rebuilt not too long ago because it was very clean and it looked like it had new freez plugs (no crosion)
thanks for the input ands sorry so long but the more facts the better the results

The oversize is determined by the shop boring the block. Depends on the depth of scoring and any prior boring. Regarding the crank, rods and bearings, you need to tear it down to know what you've got. Not very likely it's just a head gasket. I would tear it down to see if it's rebuildable, then decide thew next step from there. If it got as hot as I think it did, you may be in for a new stator and maybe some other temp damaged stuff.

Just a question- the more borred out .03 should mean moe power right? Would you have to do anything with the timing or the carbs to compensate for the added power or is it not enough to matter.
