Rebuild or Clean?

I need to clean the carb. It looks pretty straight forward to me. I was thinking that maybe I should just rebuild it since I'll have it off. I've never rebuilt a carb, and want to know if doing it is difficult, or if there are glitches I may run into. I'm worried that if I try and do the rebuild, I may cause more issues then I'd correct.

There isn't much difference between "rebuilding" and "cleaning" other than using new gaskets, seals etc. You're going to the trouble of taking it apart to clean it, spend $15 on a kit and put it back together with new parts. Cheap insurance.

That's what I figured. After I started the thread, found the samr question from a few yrs ago, and the replies were the same.

Thanks!

Nah, that carb is as straight forward as they come. Will make it easier for next time as well.

Rebuild it for sure.

Take it all apart, pull the packing washers out for the high and low speed needle, you dont want chunks of them floating about in your carb, and let is soak. Then blast all the orifices and passages with an aerosol carb cleaner. Wash with soap and water, then blast dry with compressed air. It is now spotless.

Now put everything back in reverse. Any questions along the way just ask. The new needle will have a rubber tip and will come with a little circlip that attaches to the float, this is to prevent it from sticking. The float will be upgraded as well, no longer made of cork.

Let us know how you do. There is a thread in the FAQS you should read that may help, or search this on youtube to watch others do it, not to say they are all doing it right, but will give you an idea of what to expect.

I never buy a kit until I pull 'em apart. I buy needle packing washers and nozzle gaskets by the dozen (always replace those), and if the float or needle/seat is hinky, I'll then get a kit. Canned 'duster' air is an awesome invention.. I also don't use carb cleaner unless there's old, gunky fuel residue. Just blow out the passages and make certain they're clear, re-assemble w/NEW fuel line from pump to carb (no screen past pump to catch degraded bits of inside fuel line (ethanol eats original fuel lines)). I get 25' of 5/32" line at a shot from Tims 218-682-2331.. I also buy old school used(good) coils from them for a great price to replace the cracked-up originals.. Good luck!
