Rebuild or not?

Hi-

I just acquired a 1975 Evinrude 75hp that threw a rod. Visible damage right now is limited to a hole in the crankcase front, and some loose needle bearings. It happened 3 years ago and has been in storage since then. I guess my first question is, am I going to be able to rebuild this motor, and how big of a job will it be, and is it worth it? Any initial input will be greatly appreciated!

How are you gonna rebuild a hole in the crankcase? My advice would be to find a compatable powerhead and save yourself some headaches. If that thing blew a rod through the crankcase, who knows what other problems are waiting for you. Good Luck.

The first thing to do is rip it apart. Cant hurt and you can then see whats what. If the mating surfaces of the block and crankcase are damaged then the block is pretty much toast. If the crank is damaged then it may be time to look for a replacement also. The hole in the front half can be welded as long as the mating surface is OK.

Have fun and let us know what you find. Good luck!
