I just purchased a Bellboy with a 85 HP Force.

I'm new to outboards, so have no idea what I'm doing, so please forgive me.

The starter will turn over and I believe it's called a flywheel, will turn. But it will not start. I also looked to see where the gas hookup was, but was unable to find it. I went by a boat store and asked them how much a rebuild was going to cost. They stated that it would be about $400 to $500. First is their anything I can do to check it out? (hopefully an easy fix :) )

Also is $400 to $500 reasonable? I live here in Seattle, and would love to take this boat out ASAP, before winter sets in, maybe catch a salmon or two.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Thanks, Paul

Re: Rebuild Price

First off, Welcome to iboats.

A rebuild for $500?? Not likely, more like $2000.

Hopefully it only needs a little tlc.

I think what you need before anyone can really help, is to have an experienced boater go over the boat controls and starting procedure with you. Also, launching, loading, boat safety, boat operation, rules of the water,

If you bought it at a dealership, they should do this for you.
Or ask at a local bait shop.

Perhaps ask someone at a local boat launch to help you. Don't expect them to drop everything and spend the day with you, but arrange to meet them at their convenience.

Perhaps offer $50 and dinner to someone that will spend the day going over the boat with you.

There is more to learn about a boat than most people know about their cars.
A repair manual for your motor would be a great place to start reading about the workings of your motor.
_____________________________________
Your motor needs fuel, gas mixed with the appropriate type and amount of oil.
The fuel line needs to be connected to the motor.
The vent needs to be opened.
The motor need s water to cool it and prevent overheating.
The choke needs to be used to start it.
There are so many details involved in each of these, that it would be near impossible to cover it here.

Did you get a test drive on the boat?
Did you get to see the engine run?

If you are new to boating, you should take a US Coast Guard water safety class. You will learn a lot, and will meet people that will be able to demonstrate your boat to you.

I don't mean to discourage you, but rather encourage you to do this boat thing right.

We are more than willing to help you, but this forum is geared more toward dealing with specific problems.

I would suggest you start by using the search feature at the top of the page.
Search for "starting procedure" "first time" "first time launch" "maiden voyage" "launch checklist"

That should get you familiar with some of the basics.

And remember, there are no dumb questions.
