I am rebuilding my 72 Johnson 6 HP. Right now I am cleaning up the cylinders to get them ready for pistons. The cylinders look ok, measured great, and are still round. I can still see the factory cross hatching. I plan on giving them a light hone, but I'd like to clean up the surface rust that is in both cylinders (the motor had sat for 10 years before I got it), the rust is smooth to the touch and has not eaten into the cylinder walls.
Whats a good way to get rid of the surface rust before honing, or would honing get rid of it too?
