Rebuild Transmission also?

I'm repowering an 88 Blackfin Combi. Boat had Crusader 270 with Borg Warner 71C 1.51:1 Velvet Drive transmissions. Should I be rebuilding or replacing the transmissions when I repower the boat? They are 16 years old with 1500 hours.

I noticed that the clutch & seal repair kits for the 71C are less than $100, but a rebuilt transmission is almost $1500. I'm thinking that maybe I should do this project myself. I have a manual and it doesn't look really hard. Has anyone rebuilt a 71C? Was it hard?

I was not having any transmission problems before. Just trying to avoid future problems.

Re: Rebuild Transmission also?

I don't get to play on boats with transmissions very often, My boats have Outdrives....... ;)
But,
They are 16 years old with 1500 hours.
I'd Think, That with the clutch & seal repair kits for the 71C, Along with possibly a handfull of Bearings,
You'll be Ready for Another 1500hrs...........

I agree with Bondo. It will be a lot easier to do them before putting in the new engines than after. Also you could find someone to rebuild them for a lot less than $1500. Around here it runs about 200 to 250 to get them rebuilt.

Repaired and rebuilt a few.. Probably the eaiest transmission of any sort there is to work on..

I'd go ahead and go thru them, especially if they tend to "creep" in neutral (shaft turns in neutral with engines running)...

Thanks for the opinions. I'll get a quote for the rebuilds with just new disc packs and seals. If it's too high I'll just dig in myself.

Re: Rebuild Transmission also?

Seal kit is around $100 but with the clutches and pressure plates, closer to $250-300. It is a very simple transmission but there is a few gotcha's lurking in there. Like two retainer rings that look almost identical but aren't. I would probably find someone that's familiar with rebuilding and not take a chance of getting one in and finding out later that something wasn't done correctly. Now you didn't say what you was repowering with. The engines you have now has one counter-rotating engine. If you are repowering with new engines, GM doesn't build counter-rotating engines anymore. I think Marine Power is still converting them over tho. Otherwise, you will have no choice but change transmissions.

Crusader still builds a counter-rotating engine 5.7L in several configs. Carbed, EFI etc.
