Rebuilding a Volvo GM, which kit ?

Hello !! I have a Volvo 305 GM which I am going to rebuild. There are many kits out there, but I'd like to know if there is any difference between auto and marine rebuild kit (I mean bearings, camshaft, timing chain, gaskets, rings, pistons, etc.)<br />Also what is the difference between marine and auto gaskets ?<br /><br />Thanks guys.<br /><br />Val

Yea,there are several differences. I'm working on a similar project right now. I'm replacing the 305 with a 350. You can buy a book called Small block chevy Marine performance. It will spell out what I know about it. Assuming your engine is raw water cooled here are the important points: Use marine head gaskets (Fel-pro), use a marine thermistat for raw water (135F I think), use brass freeze plugs, do not use an aluminum intake. Use a marine starter, alternator, and ignition system. Follow these rules and you may stay out of trouble. Replace the exhaust manifolds.<br />Kp

I do have all the accessories from motor, which they work fine, and manifolds/risers are in very, very good shape. My question was regarding gaskets, if marine are more expensive becouse they have to stand salwater, I will be in freshwater only, I cannot reach saltware unless I navigate all the Great Lakes to Hudson Bay (which is a dream vacation, but not for this guy).<br /><br />Val

Valv,<br /><br />Use the marine gaskets anywhere a gasket can see cooling water, ie; head, intake, exhaust. Even freshwater has alot of minerals, chemicals in it.<br /><br />Valve covers, oil pan, etc. I wouldn't think it would make a difference. <br /><br />Use the marine core plugs also.<br /><br />It's no fun to do this twice!
