I have the wont rev past a point problem. When I was working on it yesterday two different men told me that the way it was acting it sounded like carb rebuilding time ( and the motor shipped 400 miles )then riged last week so it did get bounced around a lot. My question is that after talking to a local rude dealer that wanted 8 hrs lobor plus $20.00 per kit I wanted to know if I took them off could a do it yourselfer take them apart, have vated and reassemble. And have them work or should I not try?

Re: Rebuilding carbs on a rude 225

Howdy, Boatman.

Without an OEM Manual, don't even think about it.

With the manual, carefully followed, most people can do it with the usual tools.

A few hints:

Do the carbs one at a time, use the second to help get all of the parts correctly installed on the first. By the time you get to carb 3, it will seem quite easy.

Be sure each carb goes back into it's original position.

BUT: The most common error inexperienced wrenches make is to start overhauling or replacing parts without troubleshooting to know what part(s) need it.

Spray fuel mix into each carb while you are in the limited rpm situation. If the engine picks up then that carb is not offering enough air/fuel mix.

If the fuel doesn't help, try pulling each plug wire while she is at idle and confirm that: 1. engine rpm drops, 2. you can get a hot, blue arc to the block.

These two steps can save you many bux and a lot of aggravation.

Let us know what you get. :)

Re: Rebuilding carbs on a rude 225

Boatman1959,I used a clymer book I got from West Marine to help me build my carb's on my 93' 225 Rude. These were my first OB carb rebuilds (I have rebuilt auto carbs)and these were alot easier to do.The kits are simple, not many parts and cost me $14 each.Setting the float level requires a little bending but not that hard to do.Just do one at a time (not like me and do all at once)and you won't have any problems. The air adj screw is set by turning it in all the way and then out 2 turns.I used Purple Power cleaner/degreaser from WalMart to clean the parts with, takes off varnish great(wear rubber gloves will make skin peel)and then I blew the parts off with air and sprayed with carb cleaner than air again before putting back together.Hope this helps.
