Background

I have a 1970 Glastron 16 foot. with 73 Johnson 85 hp. Boat runs well but I want to address floor issues.

Removed back to back seats and rebuilt frames.

Removed floor and found another floor. I think they tried to put another floor since original floor was weak. I think I know why my boat sits a little lower. The additional floor and wet stringers.

Base floor rotted and and stringers in bad shape. Hull in ggod shape, some cracks on outside but can repir with fiberglass on the inside.

How to repair?

Replace stringers with treated lumber and cover with fiberglass mesh? Put floor in with treated plywood? What materials do they use today? Can you direct me to information on this site. I also found these foam cushions in the hull. What are these for?

Re: Rebuilding floor and stringers

I am planning for this project(rebuild). Already removed floor and stringers(rotted).

Some questions.

Should I remove the stringers old fiberglass walls and grind down to floor?
I figure this is yes since I must rebuild the wall.

What is the exact name of the stringers. They say do not use wood but a foam since it is only used as a form. Where to find it?

Marine grade flooring- need to coat with epoxy resin or not.

Thanks for your help. Going to the library tonight for more info.

Follw the above post and read read read...lots of good info here.

Yes, grind out the old glass tabbing. Stringers is the right name for the longitudinal framing under the sole.

Wood will be fine.

I would only do one stringer at a time. When you have one installed then grind out the other one. I used dry PT ply with polyester resin. There is lots of info on this site to help you with what you are doing.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Rebuilding floor and stringers

Thanks for all your help. That book is good( Vaitses The fiberglas boat manual).

I just grinded the tabs down. Tabs in bad shape. I do not think there is a need to grind the tabs and the old overlay totally down to the hull. The tiny flat stub will act as a guide when I install the stringers. I just need to make sure I grind down any old fiberglass such as the old overlay to ensure good adhesion.

I am planning an overlay of mat mat/woven/mat/woven /mat/woven/mat sequence.
