Rebuilding Ford 5.0 Rear Main Seal Question

I am putting my 5.0 back together after some machine work. I am down to putting the rear main seal back in and am not sure which direction it should go. I have looked at the manual and other sources and have not found one that leaves me with no question. Given the amount of work going into this thing I don't want to screw this up by putting the seal in backwards.

So it has a flat side and a channel on the other side. My gut tells me that the flat side goes out or away from the block but when I look at the flange on the seal it looks like it may need to go the other way.

Thanks for your help.

I think your gut is right but you should post a pic of it if possible just to be sure.

What year block?
If you're using a neoprene seal, the lip is toward the oil, or toward the interior of the block.

Thansk for the replay.

The motor is a 1993 5.0HO. I can post a pick tonight. Yes it is a neoprene seal.
