Rebuilding gear case, random unknown washer

1983 70hp Evinrude ELCTE 20” transom

Despite being responsible and carefully labeling parts when I disassembled my gear case to replace gears/pinion/clutch, suddenly I’ve found a random washer on my work bench as I put it all back together. I believe it ended up there inadvertently and doesn’t belong. But I wanted to see if anyone is familiar with it, by chance - just in case.

It’s a 1/2 inch black washer, 1 inch diameter, 3/16 depth. Picture attached. Diagram attached for reference. TIA.

Your wife or neighbor threw it in there just for fun.-----How did you determine shims for the pinion gear ??----Did you buy new factory gears for this motor ?
